NSIB Probes Kaduna–Abuja Train Incident, Passengers Safe

The Nigerian Safety Investigation Bureau (NSIB) has launched an investigation into a railway incident involving a passenger train operating along the Rigasa–Idu rail corridor, assuring the public that efforts are underway to determine the cause and strengthen safety across Nigeria’s rail network.

According to a press statement signed by Mrs Funke Arowojobe, Director of Public Affairs and Family Assistance at the NSIB, the incident occurred at about 09:16 a.m. along the Jere–Asham section near Asham Station in Kaduna State.

The train, identified as KA2, had departed Rigasa Railway Station in Kaduna for Idu Station in Abuja within its scheduled service window of 07:15 a.m. to 10:01 a.m. It arrived at Jere Station at 08:52 a.m. and departed again at 08:59 a.m. after a rear locomotive was attached to assist the train along the corridor.

Shortly after departure, the rear locomotive detached while the train moved along a downward gradient toward the Asham section. The detached locomotive rolled forward and struck the rear portion of the train, resulting in what authorities described as a serious operational occurrence.

At the time of the incident, the train consisted of two locomotives positioned at the front and rear, one power car, two business class coaches, and six standard passenger coaches. A total of 429 passengers were onboard, alongside 46 crew members and 24 security personnel.

Despite the impact, no fatalities were recorded. Some passengers sustained injuries and received immediate first aid from medical personnel and response teams of the Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC), who acted swiftly at the scene.

The train later continued its journey and safely arrived at Idu Station in Abuja at about 10:39 a.m., where additional assistance was provided to passengers.

Commenting on the development, the Director General of the NSIB, Alex Badeh Jr., expressed concern for those affected and emphasized the Bureau’s commitment to uncovering the facts.

“This incident reminds us that every transport journey carries the trust and expectations of hundreds of people who rely on the system to move them safely to their destination,” he said, while commending the swift response of NRC personnel and emergency teams.

NSIB investigators have begun gathering evidence and analyzing operational data to determine the circumstances surrounding the incident. The investigation will examine technical, operational, and infrastructure factors, including locomotive attachment systems, train configuration, and operational procedures.

The Bureau said it will continue to work closely with the Nigerian Railway Corporation and other relevant agencies, adding that further updates will be released as the investigation progresses.

The National President of the Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transportation (CILT), Dr. Boboye Oyeyemi, and the Dean of the School of Transportation and Logistics, Lagos State University (LASU), Prof. Ogochukwu Ugboma, are set to headline discussions at the 12th edition of the Nigeria Transport Lecture scheduled for June 18, 2026, in Lagos.

The annual lecture, organised by Transport Day Media, will focus on the theme: “Multi-modal Transportation Safety in Nigeria: Prospects, Challenges & Contribution to National Growth.”

The event will hold at the Radisson Blu Hotel, Ikeja, and is expected to attract key stakeholders from the public and private sectors of the transportation and logistics industry.

Organisers said the lecture would provide a strategic platform for industry players, policymakers, regulators, and academics to examine safety concerns affecting Nigeria’s road, rail, maritime, and aviation transportation systems.

Dr. Oyeyemi, former Corps Marshal of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), and Prof. Ugboma are expected to deliver keynote presentations on the need for stronger safety frameworks, policy coordination, and sustainable transport systems capable of supporting national economic growth.

Over the years, the Nigeria Transport Lecture has featured prominent industry leaders and policymakers, including former Director-General of the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA), Dr. Dakuku Peterside; former Federal Permanent Secretary, Dr. Anthonia Ekpa; and the Managing Director of the Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC), Dr. Kayode Opeifa.

Speaking ahead of the event, the Editor of Transport Day Media, Mr. Frank Kintum, described the annual lecture as an important platform for addressing critical challenges facing the transport and logistics sector.

“Every year, we use the lecture as a platform to discuss contemporary issues in the industry. This year, we settled for multi-modal transportation safety because without safety, the various multi-modal transport initiatives by governments at different levels may be undermined,” Kintum said.

He added that the lecture forms part of Transport Day Media’s contribution towards building a sustainable, efficient, and globally competitive transport and logistics sector in Nigeria and across Africa.

Kintum noted that the event would also encourage policy dialogue, knowledge sharing, and stakeholder collaboration aimed at improving transportation safety standards nationwide.

Industry stakeholders expected at the lecture include operators, regulators, government officials, logistics professionals, academics, and representatives of transport agencies across the country.

The organisers expressed optimism that deliberations at the event would generate practical recommendations capable of strengthening Nigeria’s multi-modal transport safety framework and supporting national development.

The Managing Director of Skyway Aviation Handling Company Plc (SAHCO), Mrs. Adenike Aboderin, has reaffirmed the company’s commitment to operational efficiency, safety enhancement, and improved passenger experience following a high-level meeting with Bi-Courtney Aviation Services Limited (BASL), operators of the Murtala Muhammed Airport Terminal Two (MMA2), Lagos.

Aboderin, alongside members of SAHCO’s executive management team, paid a courtesy visit to BASL as part of efforts to deepen institutional collaboration and strengthen operational synergy within Nigeria’s aviation industry.

The engagement brought together senior officials of both organisations to discuss key industry issues including airport safety management, operational efficiency, infrastructure expansion, technological innovation, baggage handling, passenger facilitation, and stakeholder collaboration.

Welcoming the delegation, the Acting Chief Operating Officer and Head of Aeronautical and Cargo Services at BASL, Mr. Remi Jibodu, stressed the importance of sustained collaboration among aviation stakeholders in achieving seamless airport operations and improved customer satisfaction.

In her remarks, Aboderin congratulated BASL on the recent settlement announcement made by the Honourable Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, expressing optimism that the development would open new opportunities for stronger collaboration and long-term industry growth.

“We believe this development will further strengthen collaboration and create greater opportunities for operational efficiency and long-term growth within the aviation industry. Aboderin said the visit was aimed at aligning operational objectives and building stronger partnerships capable of driving sustainable growth across the aviation ecosystem.

The SAHCO Managing Director disclosed that the company was currently investing heavily in modern Ground Support Equipment (GSE), staff training, digital solutions, and customer service enhancement initiatives to meet evolving airline and industry expectations.

According to her, SAHCO is also intensifying operational discipline, safety culture, and soft skills development among personnel while introducing improved monitoring systems to reduce operational risks and enhance airside efficiency.

Speaking on ongoing expansion discussions within the sector, Aboderin said the planned introduction of a slot management system would improve turnaround time, operational planning, equipment deployment, and overall coordination as passenger traffic continues to rise.

The meeting also focused on apron safety, operational discipline, fatigue management, behavioural compliance among airside personnel, and the need to sustain efficient turnaround times to support operational reliability and passenger convenience.

Both organisations agreed on the need for continuous training, stronger safety oversight, counselling programmes, and stricter monitoring systems to reduce operational incidents within the airport environment.

They also explored opportunities for leveraging technology and shared operational platforms to improve communication, coordination, and data visibility among airlines, airport operators, and ground handling companies.

The meeting ended with renewed commitments from both SAHCO and BASL to sustain collaboration towards improving safety standards, infrastructure development, operational efficiency, and service delivery across Nigeria’s aviation sector.

Bayelsa’s Pioneer Airlines Cleared for Takeoff After AOC Approval

The Federal Government has reaffirmed support for indigenous airlines as Bayelsa State-owned Pioneer Airlines officially moves closer to commencing operations after securing its Air Operator Certificate (AOC).

Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, received the airline’s management team in Abuja on Wednesday following the successful certification of the carrier.

The delegation was led by Pioneer Airlines Group Managing Director, Capt. Okobaundu Henry Ungbuku, who formally presented the airline’s AOC certificate to the Minister and thanked the Federal Ministry of Aviation and its agencies for supporting the certification process.

Capt. Ungbuku described the approval as a significant achievement for Bayelsa State and said the development demonstrated the Federal Government’s commitment to strengthening indigenous airlines.

He praised the Ministry for encouraging private and state-backed investment in the aviation sector and creating policies that support local operators.

During the meeting, the Pioneer Airlines boss also introduced members of the airline’s management team responsible for operations, commercial services, safety, engineering, business development, and human resources.

Speaking during the visit, Keyamo welcomed the airline’s entry into the market and said the growing involvement of state governments in aviation would help expand Nigeria’s domestic and regional air transport network.

The Minister disclosed that the Federal Government was developing a Nigerian Leasing Company to support local airlines with aircraft acquisition and reduce operational difficulties faced by indigenous carriers.

He explained that Pioneer Airlines could become one of the beneficiaries of the initiative when fully operational.

Keyamo further stressed that Nigeria has a large aviation market capable of supporting more local carriers, especially on regional routes currently dominated by foreign airlines.

According to him, stronger indigenous participation in the sector would improve connectivity, stimulate economic growth, and strengthen Nigeria’s aviation industry.
