Oyeyemi Calls for Increased Funding to Improve Road Safety

Former Corps Marshal of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Boboye Oyeyemi, has called for increased government investment in road safety infrastructure and institutions, warning that inadequate funding continues to undermine efforts to reduce road crashes and save lives across Nigeria.

Oyeyemi made the call in Lagos while delivering the Chairman’s Address at the 30th Anniversary Celebration of Motoring World International and its Automotive Legacy and Excellence Awards.

The former FRSC boss said Nigeria’s growing population and rising mobility demands have placed enormous pressure on the nation’s road transport system, making sustained investment in safety infrastructure and enforcement agencies more critical than ever.

According to him, road safety must be treated as a national priority because of its direct impact on public welfare and economic productivity.

“Road safety is not an abstract concept; it is a matter of life and death. Without deliberate and adequate funding, institutions responsible for enforcement, education and emergency response cannot perform optimally,” he said.

Oyeyemi noted that despite being one of Africa’s largest automotive markets with a population exceeding 200 million people, investment in road infrastructure, traffic management systems and safety enforcement has not kept pace with the rapid growth in vehicular movement.

He warned that underfunding has contributed to road crashes, fatalities and significant economic losses, stressing that government support should extend beyond routine budgetary allocations.

The logistics expert advocated strategic investments in modern traffic technologies, safer road designs, driver education programmes and capacity building for road safety personnel.

He also urged stronger collaboration between government agencies and private-sector stakeholders, saying a multi-sectoral approach is essential for achieving lasting improvements in road safety.

“Safety on our roads must be treated as a national development priority. It requires policy consistency, institutional support and the political will to invest in systems that protect lives,” he added.

Oyeyemi further called on policymakers to align automotive sector growth with safety standards and infrastructure development, noting that rapid expansion without adequate regulation could worsen safety outcomes.

He urged Nigeria to develop a competitive automotive industry supported by clear policies, local manufacturing incentives and stronger regulatory frameworks, while embracing emerging mobility technologies that improve efficiency and safety.

The event attracted key stakeholders from the transport, logistics and automotive sectors, who used the occasion to renew calls for greater investment in road safety and sustainable mobility across the country.

Versat Automobile Limited has stepped up efforts to position EXEED in Nigeria’s premium automotive market, offering further insights into the brand’s technology, design philosophy and performance ahead of its official market launch.

The development marks a new phase in EXEED’s pre-launch activities following its initial introduction to Nigeria in August, as the automobile brand seeks to establish its identity and appeal among Nigerian consumers.

EXEED, a premium brand within the Chery Automobile family, leverages Chery’s investments in automotive research and development, including vehicle architecture, powertrain engineering, intelligent cabin systems and connected driving technology.

The brand’s approach to innovation focuses on integrating technology that improves the driving experience through intelligence, convenience, connectivity and performance, rather than simply increasing the number of technological features in its vehicles.

Its design philosophy also combines distinctive exterior styling, lighting, detailing and cabin architecture with functionality and everyday usability, reflecting its ambition to offer a premium mobility experience.

Built around the philosophy of “Born for More”, EXEED promotes a Spirit of Exploration aimed at challenging conventional expectations and providing new possibilities in mobility.

Versat Automobile believes the brand’s positioning aligns with changing expectations in Nigeria’s premium automotive market, where consumers are increasingly considering technology, design, performance, comfort and overall ownership experience in their vehicle choices.

Speaking on the development, General Manager, Sales, Versat Automobile Limited, Christopher Irumudomon, said EXEED’s introduction was about offering Nigerians a different perspective on premium mobility.

“The introduction of EXEED is about more than bringing another automotive brand to Nigeria. It is about introducing a different perspective on premium mobility, one that brings together technology, design, performance and the freedom to explore,” he said.

Irumudomon added that the company was excited to give Nigerian consumers a closer understanding of EXEED’s distinctive philosophy and vision.

As part of its ongoing engagement with the brand, the Versat team is expected to attend the International User Summit in China in October, where it will also engage with Aimoga, a high-end robotics brand, on developments at the intersection of innovation, technology and future mobility.

The company said further information about EXEED’s products, technology and design philosophy would be unveiled as its pre-launch activities progress.
