Oyeyemi Calls for Increased Funding to Improve Road Safety

Former Corps Marshal of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Boboye Oyeyemi, has called for increased government investment in road safety infrastructure and institutions, warning that inadequate funding continues to undermine efforts to reduce road crashes and save lives across Nigeria.

Oyeyemi made the call in Lagos while delivering the Chairman’s Address at the 30th Anniversary Celebration of Motoring World International and its Automotive Legacy and Excellence Awards.

The former FRSC boss said Nigeria’s growing population and rising mobility demands have placed enormous pressure on the nation’s road transport system, making sustained investment in safety infrastructure and enforcement agencies more critical than ever.

According to him, road safety must be treated as a national priority because of its direct impact on public welfare and economic productivity.

“Road safety is not an abstract concept; it is a matter of life and death. Without deliberate and adequate funding, institutions responsible for enforcement, education and emergency response cannot perform optimally,” he said.

Oyeyemi noted that despite being one of Africa’s largest automotive markets with a population exceeding 200 million people, investment in road infrastructure, traffic management systems and safety enforcement has not kept pace with the rapid growth in vehicular movement.

He warned that underfunding has contributed to road crashes, fatalities and significant economic losses, stressing that government support should extend beyond routine budgetary allocations.

The logistics expert advocated strategic investments in modern traffic technologies, safer road designs, driver education programmes and capacity building for road safety personnel.

He also urged stronger collaboration between government agencies and private-sector stakeholders, saying a multi-sectoral approach is essential for achieving lasting improvements in road safety.

“Safety on our roads must be treated as a national development priority. It requires policy consistency, institutional support and the political will to invest in systems that protect lives,” he added.

Oyeyemi further called on policymakers to align automotive sector growth with safety standards and infrastructure development, noting that rapid expansion without adequate regulation could worsen safety outcomes.

He urged Nigeria to develop a competitive automotive industry supported by clear policies, local manufacturing incentives and stronger regulatory frameworks, while embracing emerging mobility technologies that improve efficiency and safety.

The event attracted key stakeholders from the transport, logistics and automotive sectors, who used the occasion to renew calls for greater investment in road safety and sustainable mobility across the country.

Keyamo Positions Lagos as Africa’s Next Aviation Hub

The Federal Government has intensified efforts to position Lagos as Africa’s leading aviation hub, with Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, unveiling major infrastructure projects and investment opportunities aimed at transforming the city into a global gateway for air transport and commerce.

Speaking at the opening of the Invest Lagos 3.0 Summit in Lagos, Keyamo called on international investors to take advantage of the vast opportunities in Nigeria’s aviation sector, describing Lagos as the natural hub for regional and intercontinental connectivity.

The three-day summit, convened by Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, attracted global investors, business leaders, policymakers and development partners. The event was chaired by Vice President Kashim Shettima and attended by governors from several states and other top government officials.

Highlighting Lagos’ strategic importance, the minister disclosed that about 67 per cent of all international air passengers entering Nigeria arrive through Lagos, reinforcing its status as the country’s foremost aviation gateway.

According to him, Lagos’ geographical location provides a significant advantage, placing major destinations in Europe, the Middle East, Southern Africa and South America within approximately six hours of flight time.

“Lagos is strategically positioned to become a major aviation hub connecting Africa with the rest of the world,” Keyamo said.

The minister revealed that President Bola Tinubu has approved a $500 million investment for the comprehensive reconstruction and modernization of the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos.

He said the project would transform the over 50-year-old airport into a world-class facility capable of competing with leading aviation hubs on the continent.

“This is an investment from the nation’s resources to create a modern airport that Nigerians will be proud of. Within the next twenty-two months, the transformation will be evident to all,” he stated.

Keyamo also announced plans to improve access to the airport through the extension of the Lagos rail network. He said the Federal Ministry of Aviation and Aerospace Development is working with the Lagos State Government to connect the rail line from Ikeja to the General Aviation Terminal, MM2 and the international terminal.

The rail project, he explained, will improve passenger movement, reduce travel time and strengthen Lagos’ position as a preferred destination for air travellers and investors.

The minister further assured investors of the Federal Government’s commitment to protecting investments and fostering a business-friendly environment, citing the successful resolution of a long-standing dispute involving a private airport investor as evidence of the administration’s support for private sector participation.

He urged investors attending the summit to explore opportunities in both federal aviation infrastructure projects and the proposed airport development along the Lekki corridor.

Keyamo expressed confidence that ongoing reforms and infrastructure investments would enable Lagos to rival some of Africa’s most established aviation centres while reinforcing Nigeria’s position as a leading destination for trade, tourism and investment.

The Publisher of Motoring World International, Femi Owoeye, has been commended for his pioneering role in advancing automotive journalism and shaping public discourse on Nigeria’s transport sector over the past three decades.

The commendation came at the 30th anniversary celebration of Motoring World International in Lagos, where the publication was described as a trailblazing platform that has become an authoritative voice in the country’s automotive and mobility ecosystem.

Speaking at the event, former Corps Marshal of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) and President of the Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport (CILT) Nigeria, Boboye Oyeyemi, said Owoeye’s decision to establish a specialised automotive publication in 1996 was both bold and visionary at a time when the field was largely undeveloped in Nigeria.

“Femi Owoeye made a bold and unconventional decision to dedicate his career to documenting Nigeria’s automotive and transport sector. Thirty years later, that decision has produced an institution of national importance,” he said.

He noted that Motoring World has grown into a critical repository of Nigeria’s automotive history, documenting key policy reforms, industry developments and technological advancements that have shaped the sector over the years.

According to him, the publication has played a significant role in promoting accountability, policy advocacy and best practices within the transport industry while providing stakeholders with reliable information on emerging trends and challenges.

He highlighted the publication’s coverage of major developments, including changes in automotive policies, the emergence of ride-hailing services, the influx of international vehicle brands and the growing shift towards cleaner energy vehicles.

The former FRSC Corps Marshal said the publication’s three-decade archive represents a valuable institutional memory that should serve as a reference point for policymakers and industry leaders as Nigeria charts the future of transportation.

He also urged government to ensure that automotive sector growth is matched with investments in infrastructure and road safety, warning that rapid expansion without adequate planning could create additional challenges.

He called for deliberate policy measures, stronger regulatory frameworks and incentives for local vehicle manufacturing to support the development of a structured, competitive and sustainable automotive industry.

Dignitaries perform the official unveiling of the special 30th Anniversary edition of Motoring World International during a ceremony marking the publication’s three decades of automotive journalism in Lagos on Thursday.

The anniversary celebration attracted policymakers, transport experts, industry leaders and other stakeholders who gathered to reflect on the publication’s contributions to the sector and discuss the future of mobility in Nigeria.
